An Eilean Donan Castle Elopement Near Skye

Shelby and Alex travelled to the Scottish Highlands for an intimate elopement at Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most recognisable places on the road to the Isle of Skye. The castle is not on Skye itself. It sits at Dornie, where Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh meet, close enough to make it a natural part of a Skye elopement or Highland wedding trip.

With only the landscape, the castle and the people who mattered around them, the day had space to breathe. It was simple without feeling sparse, carefully planned without becoming over-managed, and full of the sort of weather and changing light that make this corner of Scotland so good to photograph.

An elopement at Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan has the scale and atmosphere of a much larger wedding venue, but it works especially well for an elopement. The walk across the stone bridge slows everything down, the water changes with the weather, and every turn gives a different view of the castle and the surrounding Highlands.

Although the castle is often associated with the Isle of Skye, it sits at Dornie on the mainland, close to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge. For couples planning a Skye elopement, it makes a brilliant stopping point or ceremony location without pretending it is on the island itself.

Photographing a Skye elopement on film and digital

The landscape around Eilean Donan and Skye suits a mixture of digital and analogue photography. Digital lets me respond quickly to weather, movement and changing light, while film brings a different texture and restraint to the quieter frames. I have not included the film photographs in this first version of the post because I am still locating them, but I will add them to the story when they are ready.
