A Boturich Castle Wedding on Film and Digital

Caterina and Jonathan’s wedding began at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow and continued at Boturich Castle, overlooking Loch Lomond. From the priest joining them for a selfie after the signing to drinks outside and a busy dance floor, there was plenty happening around the two of them.

I photographed the day on digital and analogue film, using both 35mm and medium format. The mix suited the change from the cathedral’s tall windows and stonework to the open grounds at Boturich, then the warm evening light coming through the pavilion.

A Glasgow ceremony and a Boturich Castle reception

The morning was full of the small things that make wedding preparations worth photographing: Jonathan and his groomsmen adjusting their bow ties, glasses being raised, and family coming in for a hug. With Caterina, the flower girls and bridesmaids were part of that bustle too.

At St Andrew’s Cathedral, the wedding party gathered around Caterina and Jonathan at the altar, beneath the stained-glass windows. After the signing, the priest joined them for a selfie. Outside, everyone gathered for confetti before the journey from Glasgow to Loch Lomond.

Wedding photographs at Boturich Castle

At Boturich, guests had drinks outside, children had room to run, and Caterina and Jonathan spent time with everyone before dinner in the pavilion. We used the castle’s drawing room for a few portraits too. The tall window, paintings and staircase gave us plenty to work with without going far.

Later, we went back outside for photographs on the lawn and along the garden paths, with Loch Lomond behind them. Inside, the speeches brought laughter, hugs and raised glasses. As the evening went on, sunlight came through the pavilion and people moved between the terrace and the party.

35mm and medium format film wedding photography

I photographed this wedding on digital, 35mm film and medium format film. I use all three across a day, choosing what suits the light and what is happening in front of me. Here, that meant everything from the cathedral ceremony to portraits in the castle and guests enjoying the evening.

Film is a regular part of my wedding work across Glasgow and Scotland. You can see more and read about how I use it alongside digital on my analogue film wedding photography page.
