A Two-Day Blair Castle Wedding on Film

Laura grew up in America, Scott is Scottish, and they now live together in California. For their wedding they brought those different parts of their lives together in Highland Perthshire, with a two-day celebration at Blair Castle and Atholl Estates.

Rather than squeezing everything into one afternoon, the extra day gave everyone time to settle in and enjoy being together. The wedding itself moved from quiet preparations at Old Blair to an outdoor ceremony, drinks in the sunshine, dinner and a full dance floor.

A Scottish celebration shaped by two homes

Laura and Scott’s wedding brought family and friends together from both sides of the Atlantic. With Laura’s American background, Scott’s Scottish roots and their life now based in California, Blair Atholl was a fitting place to meet in the middle. The two-day format meant the celebration could unfold without trying to force everything into a single timeline.

An outdoor ceremony at Old Blair

The wedding day began with Laura getting ready inside Old Blair while Scott spent the morning with his friends. The ceremony took place outside in the gardens. Guests walked through the grounds together before gathering around Laura and Scott for the vows, confetti and the first drinks of the afternoon.

Photographing the day as it happened

I photographed the celebration with a mixture of digital and analogue film. The film photographs suited the colour, summer light and older interiors particularly well, while digital meant I could keep following the quicker moments through dinner and the evening. Most of the day was photographed as it unfolded, with just a little direction when Laura and Scott stepped away for portraits.

Dinner, evening light and a full dance floor

Dinner was held in the wood-panelled room at Old Blair, with long tables, loose summer flowers and views back across the estate. Later, Laura and Scott took a short walk in the evening light before joining everyone inside for dancing and cake. The photographs move between the quieter parts of the day and the people who travelled a long way to celebrate with them.
